Today was the release of the new bio-pic "Notorious". The telling of the dreams to reality story of Christopher Wallace a.k.a The Notorious B.I.G.
To those of you who don't know, I am a huge B.I.G fan. I somehow even got marked with the nickname "biggie" myself, for a period of time in my late teens. I also had the privileged to be able to work under the tutelage of John Wydrycs who was an engineer on the "Ready to Die" album. One of my favorite albums of all time.
Anyway, the movie is lead by a group of relatively unknown actors. Besides having Angela Basset playing the role of Voletta Wallace, everyone else is pretty small time.
By the way, for being 50 years old, Angela Basset is still a stone cold fox.
Also on that note, Naturi Naughton (Lil' Kim)- any movie you do from now on, I am there, DAMN!
Anyway back to the review.
Jamal Woolard (Chistopher Wallace) did a pretty great job playing the role of B.I.G. His voice was not really dead on for imitation, unlike Angela Bassets, but he did a great job on the delivery and how he carried himself like B.I.G.
Derek Luke (Sean "Puffy" Combs) who has been around for a while doing some good work in films like Friday Night Lights, did a pretty decent job as well. I don't think he could really get away with walking into a club and have people mistake him for Puffy. But he sure got Diddy's dance moves down. Hilarious!
Anthony Mackie as 2pac was the only drawback casting wise. Granted he has done a decent job in other movies but just because he played Papa Doc in 8 Mile doesn't mean he can play a rapper again. He was as convincing of a thug rapper then as he is now. He did manage to nail down 2Pac's psychosis. Randomly flipping out at the camera and bystanders. Hopefully he'll do a better job portraying Jesse Owens in his new movie ironically entitled "Jesse Owens".
All in all this movie is pretty solid for any die hard fans like me.
Though I do think they could have picked someone prettier to play Faith Evans.
Go check it out because for a first time Producer like Wayne Barrow to do such a good job means he is going to be someone to look out for. Plus now Director George Tillman Jr. has something else to scrub away the dirtiness of creating "Roll Bounce".
